Suzuki Jimny

The three-door Jimny has been sold here since 2008, and the 2018 generation created waiting lists that lasted years. It is one of very few cars in SA that barely depreciates, with clean used examples trading close to new prices. The range is now GLX-only, with a 1.5 petrol and proper low-range 4x4.

Known for: waiting lists and barely depreciating

Suzuki Jimny 5-door

Launched locally at the end of 2023, the five-door adds rear doors, a longer wheelbase and a usable boot to the Jimny formula. It actually undercuts the three-door on entry price because a GL trim is offered. Demand has stayed strong and it shares the three-door's unusually flat depreciation curve.

Known for: added practicality for the cult 4x4

Common questions

Which holds value better, the Suzuki Jimny or the Suzuki Jimny 5-door?

They are close to inseparable: 79% vs 79% retained after three years. Buy on price, spec and the deal you can get, not on resale.

Which is cheaper to own over three years?

Depreciation is the biggest ownership cost. The Suzuki Jimny loses about R 92 785 over three years and the Suzuki Jimny 5-door loses about R 91 742. Fuel, insurance and servicing can narrow or widen that, but the depreciation gap is the number to start from.

What do they cost per month?

On typical finance (10% deposit, 72 months, 11.75%), the Suzuki Jimny runs about R 7 776 per month and the Suzuki Jimny 5-door about R 7 689, before fees and insurance.
