Mitsubishi Xpander

Since arriving in 2021 the Xpander has been one of Mitsubishi's better sellers in South Africa. A simple 1.5 petrol with manual or automatic keeps running costs down, and the Xpander Cross adds crossover styling at the top of the range. It fights the Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Rumion for budget family money.

Known for: affordable seven-seat family transport

Toyota Rush

The Rush was an Avanza-based crossover with seven seats and rear-wheel drive, sold from 2018 until the Urban Cruiser replaced it. Its raised stance and SUV looks attracted family buyers on a budget. Used examples hold value well thanks to the badge and the shortage of cheap seven-seaters.

Known for: budget seven-seater with suv styling

Common questions

Which holds value better, the Mitsubishi Xpander or the Toyota Rush?

They are close to inseparable: 69% vs 67% retained after three years. Buy on price, spec and the deal you can get, not on resale.

Which is cheaper to own over three years?

Depreciation is the biggest ownership cost. The Mitsubishi Xpander loses about R 114 215 over three years and the Toyota Rush loses about R 98 056. Fuel, insurance and servicing can narrow or widen that, but the depreciation gap is the number to start from.

What do they cost per month?

On typical finance (10% deposit, 72 months, 11.75%), the Mitsubishi Xpander runs about R 6 397 per month and the Toyota Rush about R 5 242, before fees and insurance.
