Jeep Renegade →
Launched locally in May 2015, the Renegade brought Jeep styling to the compact crossover class with 1.4 turbo petrol power. Sales dwindled and it was quietly discontinued in 2024, with the final Longitude and Limited models listed from R510,900. It resells cheaply against Tiguan-class rivals of similar age.
Known for: boxy styling in a small crossover
Opel Mokka →
Opel's compact crossover, first sold here in 2013 as the Mokka and later Mokka X, with the sharper French-platform generation arriving in 2021. A facelifted 1.2T range landed in 2025. Design is its calling card, but low volumes mean steep depreciation.
Known for: bold design, small sales numbers
Common questions
Which holds value better, the Jeep Renegade or the Opel Mokka?
They are close to inseparable: 58% vs 58% retained after three years. Buy on price, spec and the deal you can get, not on resale.
Which is cheaper to own over three years?
Depreciation is the biggest ownership cost. The Jeep Renegade loses about R 215 089 over three years and the Opel Mokka loses about R 225 193. Fuel, insurance and servicing can narrow or widen that, but the depreciation gap is the number to start from.
What do they cost per month?
On typical finance (10% deposit, 72 months, 11.75%), the Jeep Renegade runs about R 8 930 per month and the Opel Mokka about R 9 349, before fees and insurance.
