BAIC B40 Plus →
The B40 Plus is a boxy ladder-frame 4x4 with a 2.0 turbopetrol and low-range transfer case. Small numbers reached SA from 2021 before a wider marketing push, and the current Honor Edition sells for R699,500. It appeals to off-road hobbyists who want Wrangler-style capability without the Wrangler price.
Known for: boxy 4x4 with proper low range
Jeep Wrangler →
Sold locally since Jeep's mid-1990s return, the Wrangler has a devoted off-road community and holds its value far better than the rest of the Jeep range. The current JL sells in two-door and four-door Unlimited form, from about R1.32 million, with the Rubicon the popular pick. Older TJ and JK models remain sought after used, especially unmolested examples.
Known for: solid-axle off-road ability and cult following
Common questions
Which holds value better, the BAIC B40 Plus or the Jeep Wrangler?
They are close to inseparable: 63% vs 63% retained after three years. Buy on price, spec and the deal you can get, not on resale.
Which is cheaper to own over three years?
Depreciation is the biggest ownership cost. The BAIC B40 Plus loses about R 259 397 over three years and the Jeep Wrangler loses about R 485 763. Fuel, insurance and servicing can narrow or widen that, but the depreciation gap is the number to start from.
What do they cost per month?
On typical finance (10% deposit, 72 months, 11.75%), the BAIC B40 Plus runs about R 12 226 per month and the Jeep Wrangler about R 23 000, before fees and insurance.
